Awakening — The New Beginning

2017–2018 · Budapest · Noszvaj · Veszprém

In my own words

The project closest to my heart, and the hardest one to talk about without a lump in my throat. Women living after gynaecological cancer, photographed with their scars — not as wounds, but as proof of survival.

We worked with Dr. Magdolna Dank's oncology team and with the psychiatrist Imre Csernus, because this could never be only about pictures. For many of the women, standing in front of the camera was the first time they had really looked at their own body since the surgery. One of them called it a farewell to the past and a bow to the future. I have never forgotten that sentence.

Since 2018 the photographs hang permanently in the Oncology Centre in Veszprém, where people waiting for treatment see them every day. That means more to me than any prize I could ever be given.

Works from the exhibition

A winged figure sits on the ground in high heels, wings spread behind her.
A double exposure lays a window and a horizon over a woman's chest and arms.
A standing nude blurs into water and sky, the movement left visible.
A reclining body and a waterfall share the same frame in double exposure.
A woman's back in near darkness, bare branches showing through the shadow.
A seated figure dissolves into a rocky shoreline.
A woman stands with her arm raised while an hourglass rises behind her.
A smiling woman rests her chin on her hand, rolling hills laid over the frame.
A woman turns away as birds and clouds move through the double exposure.
A butterfly settles toward an outstretched hand, warm tones and floral patterns around it.
A hatted figure and a shoreline with wooden posts merge into one image.
An aircraft comes in to land across a reclining silhouette and a lit runway.
A figure lies across a suspension bridge and a distant skyline.
A shoulder and a hand in the foreground, a domed monument at the end of a long avenue behind.
A woman raises a lace fan, flowers filling the frame around her.
A veiled face and a bare shoulder over an open field with a distant house.
A standing figure rises out of mist above a long causeway.
A reclining figure rests on clouds between two doves, a full moon behind.
