Norbert Bánhalmi photographs people at moments when familiar roles become uncertain: after illness, across borders, through ageing, in intimacy or in public life. What remains when the role falls away? Presence is the curatorial word for this question. Since 1999, documentary discipline has developed into a practice that connects portraits, personal accounts, books and exhibitions.

EUFÓRIA is in development. The exhibition has no confirmed venue or date; it remains planned until all twenty works are made and documented.
Across these works, the portrait holds personal experience and its wider context together. Books preserve voices beside images; exhibitions bring those encounters into a shared space; the archive keeps their sources available for further research.

In 2006 I established a photo studio while working with the Hungarian Defence Forces. It taught me to work quickly, precisely and responsibly. Today I use the same attention to notice small, honest gestures. I often work with difficult subjects — illness, ageing or trauma — but I approach them quietly. The technique stays in the background so the person can remain at the centre of the photograph.
New York is where my eye finally settled. There I learned to see, not just to look. Those urban years sharpened my attention to fleeting gestures, layered public space and the point where a documentary moment can become an autonomous image.
Since Real Women (30+1) in 2014, I have consistently avoided heavy retouching. Wrinkles, skin texture and asymmetry are not flaws; they are part of a life. I work with natural or soft light and give people enough time to stop posing.
The series was made for the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution with the Hungarian House in New York. Over several months I met members of the émigré community in New York State, Connecticut and New Jersey, listened to their stories, and photographed each person with an object they had carried from Hungary. I did not set out to turn anyone into a hero or a victim. The aim was to preserve the faces and memories without imposing a judgement on them.
Realised with the Semmelweis University oncology team (Dr. Magdolna Dank) and psychiatrist Dr. Imre Csernus, the project brought photography into a medical context. I focused on recovery rather than shock. Several participants described the sessions as an important part of processing what they had lived through. In the black-and-white portraits, scars remain visible as part of the body and its history; poems by Vincent & Vincent accompany the images with an independent voice. The series toured Budapest, Noszvaj and Veszprém and hangs permanently at the Csolnoky Ferenc Hospital Oncology Centre.
Nine natural transitions, made with writer Miklós Vámos, challenge the narrow expectation that women should appear young, thin and flawless. The project extended beyond the exhibition through an online space where people could submit their own stories; my role shifted from author to host. I used a small camera rather than an imposing DSLR to keep eye contact and conversation natural. At Stefánia Palace, a roundtable with coaches and models turned the finale into an open discussion.
The 2024 Touch Vienna and Touch Munich projects approach touch as attentive human connection rather than through the objectification of the body. The earlier monochrome language gives way to gold tones and candlelight. The series asks how touch can be experienced again as something safe, attentive and deeply human.

Five key periods
These are not five separate careers. The subjects and places changed, but the same question stayed with me: when does a person, a memory or a community truly reveal itself?
My early work came from paid assignments and formal organisations. Even then I was interested in the gap between the role someone had to play and the person inside it. Clear structure, restraint and responsibility stayed with me.
In New York, and later through stories about women, fatherhood and 1956, personal memories moved to the centre of my work. I wanted private experience and shared history to remain visible in the same photograph.
Awakening, Snippets and The World of Woman followed people through illness, recovery, intimacy, ageing and turning points. Photographs, personal accounts, literature and performance came together, while everyone remained in control of their own story.
Books, exhibitions, brand partnerships and gallery work brought the photographs to wider audiences. My aim was simple: let the work travel without losing the people and stories at its heart.
Vienna, teaching, community and charity projects, and portraits of leaders brought relationships even closer to the centre. I want each person to be seen with trust and dignity, never reduced to a familiar pose.
What I look for in a portrait
Simply standing in front of a camera is not enough. A strong portrait grows from posture, gaze, trust, personal history and the brief moment when the role falls away. The next nine points show what I pay attention to while making and preserving an image.
The body, the gaze, posture, hands, breath, gesture, and the relationship between light and space. The body is not a formal prop; it carries experience.
The moment when the sitter is no longer performing an expected role. The portrait is not an exposure but a safe situation in which defences can briefly be set down.
The trust built between photographer and sitter. An image is shaped by more than optics and technique; it also depends on the human encounter.
A portrait can also be the document of a community, a social situation or an era. A personal image can therefore reach beyond the individual.
A contemporary image can later become evidence. Preserving authorship, the circumstances of its making, the date, the place and the connected story is therefore part of the work itself.
The executive portrait makes visible how a person relates to responsibility, decision-making, openness and the organisation. It creates a sign of trust, not a status symbol.
An empty space, a forgotten object, a chair, a piece of clothing or a personal trace can carry a story even when the person is not in the frame. Absence is not the opposite of presence — it is one of its strongest forms.
The same image means something different as an artwork, a LinkedIn portrait, a press photograph, on social media, or inside AI systems. Context and metadata are part of the visual meaning.
The work can remain part of our shared memory only if people can find it, understand where it came from and follow the stories around it. Keeping the archive clear and connected is part of caring for the photographs.

Working method
From the first conversation to the finished archive, these are the eight simple steps I follow for portraits, exhibitions and commissioned work.
Understanding the person, the story, the organisation, the situation of use, and the later life of the image.
Observing which expectations the sitter is trying to meet, and which gestures come from genuine presence.
Location and lighting are not style for its own sake. Their task is to support the person, not to conceal them.
The raw material of portrait photography is not light — it is trust. The technical system must be stable enough that it never disturbs the human connection.
The decisive image is often made the moment a pose stops feeling like a pose.
Choosing an image is never a purely aesthetic decision. Together, the photographs tell a story and shape how it will be remembered.
A different image works as an artwork, on a cover, on a corporate page, in press material or on a social platform. I choose the photograph according to where and how people will see it.
File name, metadata, source, connected text, licence and a stable URL are all part of preserving the work.
Career arc
This is not a row of isolated dates. Each period shows what happened, which books or exhibitions grew from it, and how the work entered public reception.
01 · 1979–1998
I was born in Budapest. On my mother’s side, painting, design, handcraft and photography were present across several generations. This did not give me a ready-made artistic career, but it made visual thinking feel natural.
This early period is described through my own recollections.
02 · 1999–2006
I took part in the MOL Y2K project as an IT specialist. Digital image-making entered my life there: on my own initiative, I began photographing the project with a basic 1.3-megapixel digital camera. I later worked in information technology and telecommunications at the Hungarian Defence Forces Command for Communications and Information Systems while documenting internal events. The beginnings of HIPStudio grew from this combination of technical and documentary experience.

Author recollection
03 · 2006–2013
HIPStudio continued independently. We documented clubs, radio stations, automotive events and occasions at the Hungaroring. Nights that lasted until dawn, rapidly changing situations and tens of thousands of human encounters taught me that a good portrait begins not with a face, but with trust.
04 · 2014–2016
Alongside commissioned work, I began making personal projects about women’s stories, fatherhood and shared history. New York was more than a location: it changed how I saw the relationship between a person, a city and public space.
05 · 2017–2018
During Snippets, Awakening and The World of Woman, photography became a book, an exhibition and a shared language. Personal experience, beginning again after illness, the body, intimacy and turning points in women’s lives appeared as connected parts of one inquiry.
06 · 2018–2022
Working with OM SYSTEM, digital exhibitions, ballet, teaching and community projects showed me that photography can do more than produce a finished image. It can bring people together, open conversations and support learning.
07 · 2023–2026
Working between Vienna and Budapest brought my art, community projects and portrait work closer together. Touch, I Am the Woman, Different Image / Different and Femme Fatale look at the body, identity and human connection from different sides.
08 · Present
BANHALMI ART brings my projects, books, exhibitions, interviews and films together in one place. The art archive and my professional website serve different needs, but both grow from the same life and work.
09 · 2026– · in development
EUFÓRIA brings together the lifelong duality of artistic and applied photography. The project includes the portrait of Péter Magyar made on 15 March 2026 at Heroes’ Square in Budapest. The archive treats the image only within the EUFÓRIA context; its public source and authorship attribution are inspectable in the Wikimedia Commons record.
