Something was left over after the exhibition that the walls could not hold: the women’s own words. That is why there is a book. Twelve stories, the same scars, and text where the photograph stops.
This book grew out of the Awakening project, and in a way it is the more intimate half of it. Twelve women who lived through gynaecological cancer, fifteen pictures of their stories, and their own words alongside.
With Dr. Magdolna Dank, Erika Elek and Imre Csernus we tried to give recovery a public language — because in 2017 nobody in Hungary was saying these things out loud. Artistic nudes and honest testimony on facing pages. Scars worn like jewellery. It is still, ten years on, the book people write to me about.
