The exhibition showed nine transitions; the book also shows what happens between them. The texts by Miklós Vámos and Éva Lénárt are not captions — they speak about the same thing in their own voice.

Nine transitions of a woman's life, with Miklós Vámos's words and Éva Lénárt's stories beside my portraits. Of everything I have ever printed, this may be the gentlest.

What still strikes me is how ordinary the extraordinary turned out to be. Every single woman thought her own story was too small to be in a book. Every single one was wrong.
